Results of the 27th International Amber Jewellery Design Competition AMBERIF DESIGN AWARD

The AMBERIF Design Award (ADA) is a competition that has accompanied the Amberif Fair in Gdańsk for 27 years. Its goal is to promote Baltic amber as a means of artistic expression. Each year, the competition has a different theme. Each edition attracts new artists from around the world, and the ensuing exhibition showcases works that will long be remembered.
On February 12, 2024, the two-stage jury deliberations for the 27th International AMBERIF DESIGN AWARD Jewellery Design Competition concluded. A record number of works were submitted: 229 artists from 32 countries submitted 295 pieces. Artists from across Europe, as well as from countries beyond, including Australia, Argentina, China, Iran, Canada, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the USA, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates, competed for selection for the exhibition and award. The jury was composed of: Katharina Kielmann from Vienna - art historian, curator of jewellery exhibitions, Carina Shosthary from Munich - goldsmith, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Anders Ljungberg from Stockholm - professor at the Faculty of Jewellery and Objects at Konstfack University, and Sergiusz Kuchczyński from Łódź - head of the Jewellery Workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź.
The jury's task was to select 26 works for the exhibition and award prizes: the Grand Prix of the competition – the Award of the Mayor of Gdańsk, the Silver Award – 1 kg of silver donated by the Gdańsk International Fair, and the Amber Award – 0.5 kg of amber donated by the International Amber Association.
The competition theme was "Symbol of Hope." The interpretation of the theme and the use of amber in the work were the main criteria for selecting the works for the exhibition. The competition jury was exceptionally unanimous and unanimously awarded the Grand Prix to Tadeusz Jaśkowiak for his "Inclusion" pendant.
The winning entry features a pendant whose central element is a silver pistol trigger. A piece of natural amber, strategically placed, prevents the firing of a shot, yet serves as the main decorative element of the work. The extraordinary power of the work's message and its universal appeal moved the jurors, and the high quality of the craftsmanship only confirmed their decision.

The Silver Award winner was German artist Miriam Arentz. Her brooch "Radiance" resembles a puzzle composed of silver and amber elements. The amber is the brooch's focal point: its luminosity symbolizes inherent optimism and the radiance of hope. Contrasted with the dark, solid silver elements, it creates a fascinating visual dialogue between light and shadow, optimism and sadness. The judges were captivated by the poetic nature of this more abstract approach to the competition theme, as well as its technical perfection.

The Amber Prize went to Teresa Dantas from Portugal. The judges praised the beauty and rich narrative of the work "Empyrian of Eden," which is both an object and a piece of jewelry. A detachable part of the piece becomes a separate work – a pendant. Its shape evokes a lamp, and the amber, acting as its light, adds depth and symbolism. The title of the work alludes to the heavenly realm, invoking spirituality and the hope of achieving perfection.

The jury also decided to award an Honorary Mention. This was awarded to Tor Legernaes from Sweden for his "Eternal Flame of Hope" ring. According to the jurors, this piece demonstrates the enormous potential of jewelry as a carrier of meaning and symbolism. They were drawn to the artist's ability to convey maximum meaning in minimal form.
