The International Amber Association was founded in Gdańsk in 1996. The association's main goal is to promote and disseminate reliable knowledge about Baltic amber. The IAA is responsible for developing a classification of amber gemstones. The IAA Amber Laboratory offers testing of products made from or with Baltic amber, and, along with issuing a certificate, also publishes the magazine Bursztynisko.
